Education

Every child deserves the opportunity to get an education, learn, explore and flourish from a young age. However, not all our children are able to join us as toddlers. Many come to Harmony House from between the ages of 5 and 8 years old - sometimes even in their teens.

They have never experienced what so many of us take for granted - being in a classroom with their peers and simply, learning. As these children have not undergone formal education from a young age, it takes extra time and effort for them to be able to follow instructions as well as interact with friends and teachers.

To help bring these children up to the formative level they should be at, we start their education from the very beginning: hygiene, manners, being tidy and easy to achieve tasks such as bathing and brushing their teeth every day. Unfortunately, these children are often also exposed to domestic violence at home, sexual assault and abusive situations that further hamper their development. Therefore, our caring team needs to provide them with consistent counselling, guidance, encouragement as well extra kindness and love to help these children achieve their full potential.

Only once this pastoral care is given and we overcome the obstacles that these children have unknowingly faced, can we start introducing them to ‘traditional’ education via books and curricula. But this too is not a straightforward process. Because of the aforementioned circumstances, we cannot immediately place children in their prescribed class by age. Often, a 6 year old will need to build a strong foundation in a classroom with toddlers before they are able to be promoted to the next grade. Their milestones are determined not by age, but their knowledge and ability to perform.

We are also acutely aware that this dedication to their all-round development is not enough. Some of our children need to work to add to the family income, or take care of their younger siblings and household chores while their parents are at work. This is why our classes and sessions run throughout the day, so that no child misses out on the opportunity to learn because of their circumstances.

Students Testimonials

My name is Ankita and I am in 11th Grade. Before joining Harmony House in 2011, I didn’t have the opportunity to attend school. But the teachers at Harmony house encouraged me to join and also helped me in my studies. They taught me how to converse in English, to use a computer and many more things. I am very grateful to my teachers for their love, guidance and support that helped me clear my 10th Grade with a 96.6% score in my tests. I feel so blessed to be a part of the Harmony House family. Thanks to their help, I know I have a bright future ahead and all my goals and ambitions will be achieved.

My name is Saima and I’m 17 years old. I am in class 12 and my dream is to become a journalist. I have three sisters and one brother. My father is a chef, and my mother is a housewife. I joined Harmony House nine years ago and have been studying since then. Before joining, I didn’t know how to either read or write and I feel fortunate to have come across Harmony House and be a part of their family. I received great support from the teachers who held my hand and made me believe in myself. Apart from studies, Harmony house has different courses like stitching, beauty culture, cooking, computer, singing, English, photography and many more Every year, we have so much fun with the volunteers that visit Harmony House. This helps us to learn about different people and also helps us in improving our English. Lucy, the Founder of Harmony House is such a great person, she loves us and cares for us. Everyone at Harmony House is like a family and together we spend most of our time learning in a fun way, especially our teachers who inspire us to work hard and achieve our dreams. It is my dream to become a successful person, to make my family and the whole team of Harmony House proud. They taught us that nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself. If you work hard you can achieve everything.

Gaurav joined in 2010 as just a little boy - and our first male student! His mother later joined Harmony House as a cook, along with his two younger sisters. Since the beginning, he has been cheeky, charming, well-mannered and intelligent. We have been supporting his education since the beginning and were so proud when he, along with three other children, were selected for an internship with Courtyard by Marriott. He was then offered a job as well! Sadly, the pandemic took this opportunity away from him, and Gaurav is currently completing his 12th grade, singing and dancing when he’s not studying.
